Ibrahim Vashqani Farahani Associate Professor of Persian Language and Literature, Payame Noor University

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important waterways in the world, and in the recent imposed war against our dear homeland, its importance has increased even further. As a result, learning about the Strait of Hormuz and Hormuz Island has also become more appealing. In response to the demand for knowledge about this fascinating topic, a large volume of material is being produced and published from various perspectives, some of which pertains to toponymy. The toponymic studies about the Strait of Hormuz and Hormuz Island published these days are often poetic and emotional in nature, influenced by the heroic and patriotic atmosphere prevailing in our current times. This, from a functional standpoint, is positive; however, it should not replace scientific facts or distort them. From the negative perspective, there is no doubt that the name of the Strait of Hormuz has no connection to the name of Ahuramazda; however, from the positive perspective, it is not accurately known what etymology the name of the Strait of Hormuz is derived from. Below, some considerations regarding the toponymy of the Strait of Hormuz and Hormuz Island are presented.
